Anita Pandeolfe Ruchman, N.P., will lead these sessions which will involve lecture and participation, including handouts and worksheets that can be done both on-site and at home.

Teachings are based on Professor Marsha Linehan’s work which is well researched and draws from Zen Buddhism, Contemplative Prayer and other wisdom traditions. Professor Linehan is an American psychologist, author and founder of The Linehan Institute. She is the creator of Dialectical Behavior Therapy, a type of psychotherapy that combines behavioral science with Zen concepts like acceptance and mindfulness.

Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., ABPP, is a Professor of Psychology, Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington and Director of the Behavioral Research and Therapy Clinics, a consortium of research projects developing new treatments and evaluating their efficacy for severely disordered and multi-diagnostic populations. Her primary research is in the application of behavioral models to suicidal behaviors, drug abuse, and borderline personality disorder. She is also working to develop effective models for transferring efficacious treatments from the research academy to the clinical community.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is officially recognized by the Cochrane Review (Stouffer et al. (2012)) as the treatment of choice for characteristics associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD) including impulsivity, interpersonal problems, emotional dysregulation, self-harm, and suicidal behaviors. These same characteristics distinguish the clients labeled as most "difficult to treat" in our mental health system.
