“The purpose of life,” says the Dalai Lama, “is the development of the warm heart.” In Tibetan Buddhism, the mind and heart are one. “Lo” means mind and heart, “jong” means to make pure or to practice. Lojong is the practice of developing a pure heart.
These teachings are some of the sweetest in all of Buddhism, and the most radical. They explode assumptions we hold about how and why things happen, and offer ways to live out of an entirely new paradigm.
Compassion is the key to personal and global happiness, but we can’t expect it to simply arise in us and sustain itself. We must cultivate the good heart.
