Join us for group meditation and instruction.  All are welcome.  No experience necessary.

Discovering Shamatha

In many contemplative traditions, Shamatha Meditation is considered a foundational practice of cultivating focused, single pointed attention that facilitates and enriches other meditation practices such as Vipashyana or insight meditation and many others as well.

Sessions cover the fundamental ideas, methods and practices of Shamatha Meditation also known as the practice of "bare attention". Shamatha may be described in three aspects or phases: Mindfulness of the Breath, Settling the Mind and Awareness of Awareness. We will explore these aspects of Shamatha through observation, discovery and experience of the nine stages or levels of attention and the qualities of attention that become apparent in each stage.

Sessions include teaching, guided meditation and discussion as well as suggestions for resources for further reading, study and practice.

Fred Hammdorff is facilitator.  Each session includes a 24 minute meditation, readings and discussion.
