Wisdom’s Heart rejoices in the return of Upasaka Culadasa for this exceptional two-day event!
Culadasa will be discussing the topic of Compassionate Engagement and how to handle harmful emotions and thought patterns as they arise and the actions they produce - starting from the internal/personal level out to the global.
In October 2015, Culadasa, Matthew Immergut and Jeremy Graves published, “The Mind Illuminated. A Complete Meditation Guide Integrating Buddhist Wisdoms and Brain Science.” The book offers thoughtful, step-by-step instruction on every stage of meditation. It is used as a reference for One-Day Retreats held at Wisdom’s Heart and has been both a guide and an inspiration for many in our community.
Culadasa has practiced Buddhist meditation for over four decades and is the director of Dharma Treasure Buddhist Sangha in Tucson, Arizona. He has deeply studied both the Theravadin and Tibetan traditions. This unique lineage allows him to provide a broad and in-depth perspective on the Buddha Dharma. He has combined the original teachings of the Buddha with an emerging, scientific understanding of the mind to give students a rich and rare opportunity for rapid progress and profound insight.
Culadasa taught neuroscience for many years as a college professor, and in the 1970’s worked at the forefront of the new fields of complementary healthcare education, physical medicine, and therapeutic massage. He retired in 1996 to live a contemplative life in the wilderness of an old Apache stronghold in southeastern Arizona.
His principle teachers were Upasaka Kema Ananda and the Venerable Jotidhamma Bhikkhu, both of whom were trained in the Theravadin and Tibetan Karma Kagyu traditions by the Venerable Ananda Bodhi (Namgyal Rinpoche). Ananda Bodhi was originally a Theravadin teacher, but was later recognized by the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa as the tulku Namgyal Rinpoche.
